How do I meditate as a member of Alcoholic’s Anonymous?

I am a member of alcoholic’s anonymous and am trying to improve my conscious contact with god through prayer and meditation. I have several prayers, but not a clue on how to meditate. Can some one tell me step-by-step how to meditate as a beginner? This would true help me since I do not have the finances to take a class or buy a book.

Ole Baby, that was simply a filthy lie. It isn’t even a religion.
There are many ways to meditate. A good way to start is to simply count your breaths.

Step 11 talks about Prayer and Meditation. The AA prayers and the Serenity Prayer are good to do. Meditation is quieting the mind and going within so that one can hear one’s inner Self. The simplest way to do this is to sit with one’s back straight, either cross legged on the floor or on a chair or on the bed. Close the eyes (to reduce the distractions around you and keep the energy within) and “watch” your breath. Breathe in, hold the breath for a second between the eyebrows and breathe out. Breathe out as far as you can and breathe in as deep as you can. Do this in a relaxed way. Start with 5 mins. You can silently say “SO” as you breathe in and “HAM” as you breathe out if you choose. This is the sound of your breath. Remember you are relaxed. Developing this discipline will help you tremendously. Being consistent is very important. Try to choose the same place and time if possible. If not, do it anyway. Good luck!

The word meditate means: to ponder on. We are meditating all the time. The question is what are we meditating on. Are we meditating on selfish things or are we meditating on God. The Bible suggests mediating on what is good, right and Holy. It clearly says that we should meditate on Holy Scripture. I would suggest meditating on the book of John first, in the New Testament. Then the rest of the Gospels and then the entire New Testament and finally the whole Bible. Faith comes by studying and hearing the Word of God. Prayer is talking to God and meditation is listening to God. The Holy Bible is God’s thoughts in print and there is no better way to hear from Him. Meditating on our own minds is dangerous because the Big Book says that the main problem centers there. That is a true statement.
