How to meditate like a Zen Master

   My meditation technique to help me first forgive my enemies and then come to love and understand them is this…

   I picture that person sitting across from me and we have streams of white light connecting us together. I say to this person, “I honor and thank you for the lessons you have provided me.” I then picture a sword or other beam of white light cutting the connection between us while I say, “I completely forgive you.” I clear the energy of the streams of light and watch the person walk away. Then I retell myself that before that person and I were born, we decided to have the drama we had in order that we both could grow spiritually. It is that understanding that helps me to love them / their soul. Hope this helped.

   For love and understanding towards an “enemy,” I like to picture them having a such a truly beautiful experience that it brings a tear to their eyes. Somehow then it is easier for me to soften my heart towards them and be more compassionate.

   Also, there is a technique of simply bringing people to mind and wishing them well — wishing good health and safety and peacefulness for them — starting with people for whom it’s easy for you to wish them those things, then bringing to mind people toward whom you have sort of a neutral relationship or don’t really know, and ultimately bringing to mind those persons with whom you have a hard time feeling kindness towards.

   And I think for self-purification you can extend that previous exercise to include yourself. Being compassionate towards ourselves is very important and it is not always strongly supported in our society. (I always try to remember when thinking about the Biblical injunction to love others as ourselves, that, if we don’t love ourselves, we won’t do so well with that call to love others as much.)

   Meditation is used to purify the mind from all unwholesome mental factors so we effectively love others (especially our enemies) and ourselves unconditionally. It produces Patience which is the ability to remain internally and externally calm and undisturbed in the face of harm and difficulties in life. *Meditation practiced daily produces much patience, humility, unconditional love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, gentleness, joy, goodness, peacefulness and wisdom in our lives.
