A. R. asked:
I am looking for internet sources to learn meditation techniques to relieve mental stress and anxiety. Can anybody suggest such sites? I notice most sites discuss a lot about usefulness of different methods but do not give clear instructions about how to practise meditation. Also I want to understand how meditation work so that we are relieved from stress. My health is affected due to mental stress at present.

Meditation can be done anywhere. You need to be able to clear your mind though so a quiet place is necessary. Some people like to have a mediation CD in, and you just lose yourself in the music…lol, I know it sounds corny, but it’s very relaxing!! Close your eyes, clear your mind, and just relax. It’s kind of hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s almost addictive. Try getting some books on Reiki, that would be a good starting point.

Learn breathing techniques from a yoga teacher. There are many kinds of them. One helps you lose stress.
There is another to sharpen your voice for public speaking. Then there is another to help you control thirst when you are out of supply for water. There is one to speed up digestion.
Begin with breathing exercises. Otherwise meditation itself could be a difficult thing to do.

I googled some for you but most of the sites available smell fishy… I suggest try meditating on your own. I could teach you some but this is not the right forum for it.
To start with, try closing your mind to the outside world before you go to sleep and then focus on each part of your body from toe nail to hair tip on your head and ask it to loosen up and relax. That helps you sleep better.

Found this study on iyogalife.com about how yoga works- stuck it in the source below. It’s really interesting- only takes 20 minutes a day to see results!
They’ve also got good instructions on breathing techniques like Alternate Nostril Breathing and Sitali Breathing that could help you on your way to meditation.
