An amazingly effective meditation which bring marvelous change in your consciousness is meditation on the sound of this mantra (you should chant the mantra and focus on its sound), consisting of the holy names of God:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare
Hare is pronounced as “harey”.
Later you can get chanting beads for chanting this mantra. Best time for this meditation is early morning hours. This meditation is recommended in Vedic literature as especially beneficial in this age.

BE COMFORTABLE! That whole lotus-position thing only really works if you are comfortable in it. It you’re more comfortable laying on the floor with your eyes closed listening to soft instrumental music, or sitting crosslegged in silence, or whatever, do that. Don’t try to be like they are in the movies, on tv, or on the videos. Dress in comfy clothes, sit comfortably, etc. You have to clear your mind, which you can’t do if you’re busy thinking about how your legs are killing you, or singing along with Justin Timberlake’s latest.
Meditation is about clearing your mind and finding your center, but if you’re just getting bored, quit and move onto something else. Go on the computer, for a walk, do the dishes, and try again later.
