There are many books on zen that could help you. Look to your local library or bookstore for guidance before attempting to find a school. I would suggest readings by Thich Nhat Hanh or Hsuan Hua. You can easily practice zen and meditation in your own home. Contact me if you have any other questions… good luck.

Zen is a form of Buddhism most present in Japan.
Contrary to mainstream Buddhists, Zen Buddhists hold that personal inspiration is more important to achieving enlightenment than study of Buddhist scriptures.
The main practice of Zen is meditation.
Zen meditation is practiced by sitting in a comfortable position, in a silent place, and concentrating on one’s breath. One tries not to lose one’s concentration and one gets rid of intruding thoughts without doing violence to one’s self. Beginners can start with 5 minutes of meditation. After a while, you may want to move on to 10, 15 minutes or longer.

Actually, you don’t need to know anything in advance before you go to a Zen center. Every Zen center will have easy ways for new people to get started with Zen practice. The practice itself is quite simple and the Zen center community will support you along the way.
If you practice Zen meditation sincerely, then over time your life will begin to change. You just have to do it!
A classic book on Zen (THE classic) is “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind” by Suzuki Roshi. It’s readily available, both new and used. Most libraries have it. I’ve provided an Amazon link below.
I’ve also provided a link to a directory of Zen centers in the United States. If you live in another country, this site also has listings of centers in other countries. Good luck!
